The Coosawattee River is located in the northwest part of the state of Georgia. The river begins at the confluence of the Ellijay River and the Cartecay River in the city of Ellijay which is located in Gilmer County. Best known for rafting, fishing, and beauty, the river offers something for everyone. James Dickey used the Coosawattee as the basis for the “Cahulawassee River” in his famous novel, Deliverance.
The lively section of the river which is upstream of Carter’s Lake is fun to paddle, with three or four legitimate Class II runs. The river in this section varies between forty to eighty feet wide. The anglers boast of catches including spotted, redeye, rock bass, bluegill, redbreast and plenty of catfish. The lower stretch of the Coosawattee is much longer and far more placid making it suitable for a enjoying a lazy afternoon of swimming or floating in a flat bottomed boat.
Nature lovers are attracted to the natural beauty of the area, the wildlife, and to the abundance of clear flowing mountain streams and rivers. Spectacular home sites and tasteful developments dot the banks of many of the rivers in the area including the banks of the Coosawattee. Real estate along the river, because of its desirability and relative scarcity, retains its value regardless of what is happening in other segments of the market.
